2018 was a vintage to remember, for the entire state of California. The grapes for this Nouveau came from a 5 year old Syrah vineyard in the heart of Sonoma Valley; under the foothills of Sonoma Mountain. In Sonoma, the winter started off relatively dry, until the ‘Miracle March’ rains came to restore soil moisture and extend the dormancy period. Spring-time was relatively cool, without any major frost events, with significant warming in late spring for excellent flowering conditions. June and July were very warm, and by August things had cooled down below average, which made this a season to remember. Very long, slow-ripening ensued, allowing us to pick on September 15th; or about 3 weeks after 2017, and at very low sugar levels. The grapes fermented in closed vats, whole cluster, for a three week carbonic fermentation. No crushing, pumpovers, or punchdowns. The grapes were pressed and finished fermentation in barrique for a short elevage of 5 weeks. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no sulfur added.
